Carthage Jail is a correctional facility in Carthage city of Illinois State. The prison was the location of the death of Joseph Smith who was the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement and his brother Hyrum by a group of 150 men. The prison was built back in the year 1839. This facility was added to National Register of Historic Places(NRHP) in the United States on March 20, 1973. The jail building consists of two levels measuring twenty-nine by thirty-five feet. At present day the jail is converted to a Museum that is owned and operated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and made a historical site and visitor's center.
